Renewing Dental Therapy in Canada

September 2014, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences released a report on increasing access to oral health care in Canada for vunerable people. In the report one of the recommendations is to identify the health care delivery systems and personnel necessary to provide these standards of oral health care. Under this recommendation they went further to include the renewal of the role of dental therapy. Under diversifying the oral health care work force, the report mentions dental therapy favorably.

" ...the dental therapy model, which is aimed at providing basic oral health care to children and emergency care to adults has been shown to be successful. It could provide a model for improving access to many child populations beyond the limited jurisdiction in which it is currently allowed...Indeed, the effectiveness of dental therapists was well documented early on putting to rest professional criticisms on productivity and quality."

Dental therapist Carrie Marion goes the extra mile to promote oral health in her community. Carrie dazzled on lookers as she goes on parade on her own float dressed up as a giant molar. Carrie goes on to spread the message of oral health with her 6 year old daughter Shanika on James Smith First Nations Reserve in Kinistino, Saskatchewan. The molar costume was designed and created by Carrie, showing her dedication to her role as a dental therapist. Her efforts highlight her ingenuity and creativity to think outside the box to promote oral health.
